'Festool Play' Workshop Radio Project

BRAND
Festool is a brand identified as ‘Ferrari of power tools’. It is described as a holistic system that serves as a partner in on-the-go work and it’s intuitive interface is addictive.

CHALLENGE
Market research identified a gap within existing workshop radios. All analysed workshop radios lack the quality of values that Festool products are identified with. Instead, they offer bulky, heavy and complicated. Festool radio needs to fit the system, be easily operated on-the-go and at the same time feel unobtrusive. Challenges of context scenario in 1+ people size workshop include, but are not limited to: there is a competition, which radio station to put on, there is no way to adjust the volume when far away from the radio, a disturbing cacophony is created when people talk, tools are in use and radio is playing in between, it is hard to change the frequency or radio station with tool gloves on.

SOLUTION
Complete brand analysis has been performed to create a product that feels Festool-like in interaction, aesthetic appearance and function. Drawn conclusions directed design process of the project. They included: all buttons that indicate function buttons need to be Festool-green, it needs to fit the Festool holistic system.

OUTCOME
Begin the workshop work with radio broadcasted music as background partner and radio as an unobtrusive object.
